What happened
In 2011 I was referred by my GP to an ear, nose and throat specialist, Professor Arvind Arya, at Wrexham Maelor Hospital. Following an endoscopy and subsequent biopsy I was diagnosed with throat cancer. 7 weeks of radio and chemotherapy was planned and administered, at Glan Clwyd Hospital. I had regular visits and endoscopes with my Consultant Surgeon Prof Arya, which were all fine until 2015, when MRI and CT scans revealed my cancer returned. I was admitted to Glan Clwyd Hospital where I had major, life saving and life changing surgery, a full laryngectomy. After a week I was transferred (closer to home) back to Wrexham Maelor Hospital. Following a few months as an in-patient on the ENT ward, I was delighted to walk out of the hospital's front door. 5 years on and I remain cancer free. The treatment and care I received, from start to finish, was world class. Without a doubt I owe my life to the NHS and I will never forget the wonderful professionalism and care I received.
